The Biology of the Giant Freshwater Prawn

Our Ceylon Giant Freshwater Prawn is a product of Sri Lanka's ancient inland reservoirs. Our prawns are cultivated through a culture-based fisheries system, relying solely on the natural food web of the reservoirs. No artificial feed, chemicals, or aeration is used. Harvested as an incidental catch by community fisher cooperatives, they are landed fresh and sustainably.
Macrobrachium rosenbergii, the Ceylon Giant Prawn, is a species of remarkable resilience. Its biology is defined by a life cycle that thrives in the ancient, perennial reservoirs of Monaragala District, where it grows on the natural food web without the intervention of feed or chemicals.
These prawns are released as post-larvae into the reservoirs, where they are sustained by the rich biodiversity of the ecosystem. The water is never drained, preserving the delicate balance of the natural food web that supports their growth.
Landed as an incidental catch by community fisher cooperatives, these prawns are harvested with care. This culture-based fisheries model ensures that the product is wild-grown, sustainable, and free from any artificial intervention.
